Password managers, compared simply

A password manager remembers a strong, different password for every account. You only remember one main password. CISA recommends using one. (CISA: Use strong passwords)

No ads in this table. We are not partners with any of these companies today and these are plain links to their own pages. Prices change often and many sites show sale prices for the first term, so we do not list prices here. Check the vendor page for today's price and the renewal price.

How to pick (in 3 questions)

  1. Do you want free? Bitwarden and Proton Pass have free plans that work on all your devices. NordPass and RoboForm have free plans with device limits.
  2. Sharing with family? Most have a family plan with a shared vault, so you can share the Wi-Fi password or streaming login without texting it.
  3. A tiny office? Pick a business or team plan, so you can remove access when someone leaves. See our tiny office checklist.

Set it up in one evening

  1. Pick one manager and install the app and browser add-on.
  2. Make one long main password. A short sentence of random words is easy to remember.
  3. Turn on two-step login for the manager itself. See app vs text codes.
  4. Change your email and bank passwords first. They unlock everything else.
  5. Many managers also store passkeys.
